Review on πŸ”‹ Opus BT-C2000 Charger Set - AC 100-240V Battery Charger Tester Analyzer for NiMH NiCd AA AAA C D Cells, with Wall Adapter 12V Input - Portable Option by Casey Stevens

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Died after 5 months of light use

I ordered two of these in August, now at the end of December and one has died. I contacted the US dealer who I thought might not honor the warranty because Revain sold it. To make matters worse, they had firmware version 2.0 instead of the vastly improved and highly acclaimed 2.1. So with light use for 5 months one of the two works for me, let's see how long the other lasts. --- Update after some research ---- The company I _think_ is a US distributor, they are not, they are just a seller. However, I bugged Robert from Datalucis with several long emails and he always responded very quickly with the same long emails (!) with LOTS of information about several different chargers, brands and battery types. He sells this charger and others on Revain under the name DL Portable Power. I have listed all the information below and then discovered that what I purchased was 'supplied by Revain' but now when I look up that part number and/or go to my review it is hooked up to a device , which was supplied by DL Portable Power. So I'm not raising my score for the marginal device I already own, but for the pre-sale customer support I received in return. I'll be back for updates in a few months. Now I'm wondering if Revain will move it back to the item they supply as the rating has gone up! GRRR. So here's the short and dirty version: There's another charger out there, the PowerEx MH-C9000, which Robert says is "the best thing" about really keeping your feet on fire, but mostly because it can charge up to 2000mA while the BT-C2000 can only charge with 1000mA. (Although you can of course get 1400mA if you only charge 2 at a time.) However, you never want to charge AAA at more than 400mA or AA at more than 1000mA or 1200mA (depending on the battery speed, it will cause overheating). and shortens battery life. Both chargers monitor the batteries' temperature, but that's still a bad idea. If you are also charging cells C and D and need a FAST charge, you may need more current, but only if you want to charge them fast. The slower the charge rate (to a certain extent), the longer the battery life (in number of charges, not how long it lasts on a given charge). I used 200-400mA for my AAA batteries and 800-1000mA for my AA batteries, I could increase it faster but I usually set it in the morning and don't touch it until the evening or vice versa and charge it at nights, so who cares? The MH-DC9000 also has a different charging algorithm that can give the batteries an extra percentage or two "charges", but again potentially at the cost of limiting battery life. Interestingly, this BT-C2000 charge/tester comes with an adapter for C and D elements, while the larger capacity charge/tester doesn't! The great advantage of this BT-C2000 charger is that it is easier to use. It also has the additional function of checking the internal resistance of the batteries. I'm not sure Revain will end this, but there's a lot of good information on batteries and chargers in general on the Danaco dot web. It's about charging speeds, types and brands of batteries and chargers, including the two mentioned here. All great info. All in all, the BT-C2000 charger sold by Revain, which I received two of, is older V.2.0 software. Apparently they made a lot of these and when they upgraded the hardware and firmware to version 2.1 they dropped a lot of the old 2.0 versions and Revain sells them. Charger version 2.1 sold at Revain by DL Portable Power BT-C2000 Battery Charger Analyzer for NiMH NiCd AA AAA CD Cells with Car Adapter or Opus BT-C2000 Charger Set AC 100-240V Battery Charger Analyzer for Batteries NiMH NiCd AA AAA CD- Cells, wall adapter 12V input Portable option if you have a basic. (The second link may be an element of this review, Revain plays fast and loose!) They specifically state that this is version 2.1 and is obtainable if you don't charge mostly C and especially D elements. And unlike Revain , DL Portable Power supports the manufacturer's 1-year warranty once they have sold the device. So I replace my dead Revain supplied unit with a 2.1 version _sold_ by Revain supplied by DL Portable Power if there were no other reason than Robert having to spend a whole hour checking my email for an item sale and answer for $40. THIS is customer service! I'll look at version 2.1 when I get it, test it and see if it works for a while.

Pros
  • Durable test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
