Review on Unleash Nostalgia with Pac Man Connect Play Classic Games: Experience Classic Arcade Action! by Matt Tbone

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good for the price, but questionable joystick.

I bought this mainly because I wanted to play Super Pac-Man and it was cheaper than any copy of Namco Museum Volume 2 for PS1 (the only other compilation I know of with the game) . I think for $16 I got my money's worth, but as many others have pointed out, the joystick is fine. The joystick feels pretty loose, which isn't great for any form of Pac-Man that requires precise maneuvering. In addition, the stick makes a clearly audible click with every movement, which makes me think of the durability. Many of the titles included (Dig Dug, Galaga, Xevious, Bosconian) are easy to find in any number of compilations, but this set includes two additional games (Pac and Pal and Pac-Man 256) that are interesting new additions. Pac-Man 256 starts the player at level 255 of the game, and upon reaching that level the player may see the infamous "Kill Screen" at level 256. I've never been good enough at Pac-Man to get this far, so this is a nice addition for me, although the replay value after a single play isn't great. Pac and Pal is a rather strange game that I have never seen in a slot machine. The basic mechanics are similar to Super Pac-Man, but you are accompanied by a "buddy" who sometimes helps you by grabbing various foods from the screen, thus helping you complete the level. By picking up various items from other Namco games (Galaxians, Rally-X cars, etc.), Pac-Man can shoot or spit smoke to disable ghosts. It's a very strange game and I can understand why it never got too many viewers. Pac-Man Plus is an interesting variant that has some gameplay changes (sometimes just three ghosts turn blue from eating a power pill). , and ghosts are more aggressive), but I'd rather see a game like Junior Pac-Man in its place, since that game is hard to find even in official collections.
