We chose two rat pups (6 weeks old) and they fit in here perfectly but they are quite small. It might not be the most comfortable place for your rats, but an hour's drive home is fine. So if you are getting a larger animal/rodent I would not recommend this. I love that it comes with two pads and I just put them in, plus a few pieces of fleece for extra protection. The zipper works well but is a little fiddly when trying to close it and keep the rats out. We love the clear plastic window because my daughter loved watching her new rats all the way home. Yes it could be a bit bigger but overall we are happy with this purchase. It worked for what we needed it for.
