Before ordering this jacket I read a lot of reviews, most of which recommended going up a size. I actually followed that recommendation and got the size for my 4.5 year old but ended up giving this jacket to my 6.5 year old. Should you increase the size? I think it depends on your child. My son is 6 years old (he will be 7 in May), 52 inches tall, weighs 54 pounds and small fits him perfectly. I mean excellent. He may not be able to wear it next winter, but for $15 I'm fine with it. If your child is a husky or you are buying clothes that your children will grow into, you will need to choose one size larger. As for me, I assume he's going to lose this jacket, or it's going to have a horrible end (something spills on it that I can't get it out of, etc.), so I'm not worried about how he can grow into it. The jacket itself is well made, thick and very warm. It reminds me of a thick Columbia fleece jacket I used to have.
