Review on I-o DATA GV-USB2 Video Capture Device with USB Connection by Jeremy Hong

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Better than El Gato

I'm a videophile and I archive hard-to-replace VHS movies with the JVC HR-S9900U. I compared this device to ElGato, which I also had at the same time. There's also a good Diamond, but I haven't tried it. Instructions and assembly as expected in Japanese. I used Google Translate through my phone's camera to translate this. After reading a lot online I was able to get great results using OBS Studio and Handbrake to capture, crop, fix to 640x480 and deinterlace. ElGato Video Capture is probably the next best device available. ElGato comes with basic software but no settings. The saved material was too compressed and had a deal-breaker problem; The audio will be out of sync throughout the 2 hour movie (starts out in sync, going out of sync by about 200ms towards the end of the tape). If you're serious, get the GV-USB2 and be prepared to read and experiment. If you have material that's less than an hour long and just want something really light, get ElGato.
