I'm at a point in my life where it's difficult to reach my shoelaces. I needed one of the old shoe benches to put my foot up so I could reach. Such shoe shops were too expensive for me. Also, I travel sometimes and when I can't get a chair in a hotel room, it just hurts to sit on the bed to reach it. So a stool that folds almost completely flat. Fits in the bottom of my luggage and gives me a few inches of headroom to reach my shoes. This is probably not the purpose for which the manufacturer designed the tool. But it works for my needs.
