My chihuahua terrier weighs 12 pounds (11.5 pounds when I first bought him), is about 13 inches tall (back to toes standing up) and 20 inches long. We bought the medium size. We have used the sling 3 times on long walks of at least 1 mile. It has held up well every time and our dog seemed comfortable. It is also very comfortable to wear when wearing. While it was close to the recommended weight for a medium sized carrier, I felt we should have gone down a size since our dog's body length fills the carrier. At the moment it fits perfectly but I think it would be roomier, especially on our long walks. However, our dog loves it. When it's time to go out, we'll put the bag on the floor, but he'll keep lying in the bag until we pick him up and take him out, ha ha! I gave 4 stars because the straps are adjustable but if you get 5 or 6 inches. From the end of the harness the harness will come out all the way once your dog is inside as it won't hold anything. As long as you keep it about 6 inches from the end of the strap you shouldn't have a problem. We ran like a mile and the belt never came out. The extra length at the end somehow helps keep it secure! I recommend laying the bag on the floor or laying it completely open on the floor and then letting the dog sit or lie down at the opening. Pull the bottom edge of the bag up over your legs, then zip up and slowly lift the bag up and over your shoulder. This has worked for us every time. If you have a small/light dog but whose body length is quite large, I would recommend increasing the size of the crate.
