This is an excellent product when used as directed. If this isn't working for you, I encourage you to reconsider your approach. Why should I say that? I had to fix several active leaks in plumbing that looked like an outdoor fire hydrant (we bought the house a few years ago and that's how the outdoor water supply was designed). There are several active leaks in the block. The water pressure comes directly from the main water supply. Leaks were on the order of 1/16 inch holes (like a mini faucet in one case). Clean the surface well first. I used dish soap and then 70% alcohol with coarse sponges (i.e. to get rid of all the oils and grease). Then sand the surface. Mix the putty as instructed. Make sure you knead it until it's evenly colored (I think it says grey, but I think it was white), don't knead too much (I've found about 3-4 minutes of vigorous kneading is ideal are for a whole roll). ; I would also suggest cutting the roll in half lengthways, then braiding the two halves together and beginning kneading to mix the core and shell components together). When it's done, it will also start to smell like stale urine. Think about peeing in the toilet without flushing for a week, got it? ;) Use a water joint volume that you can apply good pressure to without diluting it too much. As I said, I've been "struggling" with active leaks. I have learned that for this type of problem you have to apply water seal to the leak and then apply constant pressure for about 7-10 minutes to allow it to start to solidify and resist the water pressure. Otherwise, the pressure of the water will cause it to deform and form bubbles that will eventually dilute it enough to form a hole in it. I applied manual pressure. Not fun, but it worked. Also, be sure to press it firmly around the edges to ensure good contact. Once set, I applied more to the sides and top just to be sure. In summary, with proper surface preparation, mixing and application, it has done an excellent job treating active leaks from the mains water supply. Finally, gloves would be a good idea, but I found they made it difficult for me to manipulate them, so I worked with my bare hands. Getting your hands wet will also make it easier to handle and in my case as I have had to apply hand pressure for a long period of time it will reduce putty sticking to your hands. Struggling with a few leaks, I ended up with a caked hand. To remove dried putty from your hands, I recommend using acetone. I soaked 3-ply paper towels in acetone, then wrapped my hands and left them in place for about 30 seconds, then used the dampened paper towel to wipe the putty off my hands. Wash your hands well with water. Finished. Water welding is great!
