Turns on when I do nothing, the remote control is broken

There were no instructions. I like the colors and options and the remote control idea, but it's a bit off. Sometimes I get it working, sometimes not. And often the light comes on when I'm not doing anything (and if I don't notice it, then the battery is dead). There's a little button on the unit that appears to turn it on and off - I can fall back on that if the remote doesn't work.
