Review on SVBONY Red Laser Collimator: Perfect Alignment for your Newtonian Marca Telescope by James Julien

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Bright, sharp and well-aimed

Considering its price compared to other offerings, this collimator is a steal! The aluminum body gives it a nice weight and the overall construction feels premium. It even has an O-ring around the battery compartment! My collimator was practically up. I didn't notice any movement of the laser point during the "roll test". If you don't, there are a couple of screws hidden under rubber caps on the top that you can use to make adjustments. The laser brightness setting has a non-linear response, ranging from barely noticeable at 1-4 to blindingly bright at 5-7. . The laser's red dot also changes shape from round to rectangular, but remains in the center regardless of shape. Tip: Some "Newtonian" telescopes are actually Bird Jones telescopes that have a corrector lens in the focus tube. This smears the laser beam into a drop. In this case, you may need to remove the corrector lens. Otherwise, I've found that it's still possible to get decent collimation without removing the lens as long as you can still see the "blobs" on the collimator. no bright light source is available. It comes with detailed instructions, although I would recommend checking them with other sources, especially your telescope manual if you are using it for the first time.
