Review on MAGNAVOX MDR513H F7 Recorder Digital by Rick Bear

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great device for the money

I bought this device after my old Pioneer finally broke down which was a blessing in disguise. I originally bought my Pioneer DVS220 for $180 and 6 years later for just $20 I bought this Magnavox which has a much better picture, has DVD and HDD recording capability and separates the digital cable from the cable box so you can watch local broadcast channels without having to set up a cable box (if that makes sense to you). In addition, other connected channels can also be selected for local broadcasting, e.g. B. ABC channels 7. 7.2, 7.3 etc. It also picks up subtitles and gives you the option to either view them on your TV. or you can record subtitles to show up if you want (something I still don't know why anyone would want). And if you've set recording to disc and forgot to insert a disc, it'll automatically record to HD. The HDD can record up to 300 hours of program at slow speed and 63 hours of program at HQ speed, which is still more than enough, so of course I do all my recordings at HQ speed. It also has dubbing and editing functionality, so if you decide to keep the recording you can edit the viewing from HD and then transfer it to DVD. Another great thing about this device is that it supports DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, etc. I have yet to try this as I still have DVDs from my old recorder, but the instructions say that if I'm burning to DVD+ discs, I don't need to finalize the disc for playback on another player. But so far I like this unit and the picture is much better than my old Pioneer set. Of course there are a few things I wish this unit had what my old one had, namely a simpler pre-search in minutes with different forward and backward steps and the ability to program in show titles set to the timer, but given the huge plus I think I can adapt. There are many more options this recorder gives me that I must try, but so far I am very, very happy with my purchase.

Pros
  • it has 1080p conversion
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
