TURN THE NUT COUNTER-CLOCKWISE TO TIGHTEN AND CLOCKWISE TO REMOVE, unlike regular nuts! towards normal nuts. The nut will never engage the bolt if you try to tighten it by turning it clockwise, the direction you turn a regular nut to tighten it. The nut must be turned counterclockwise to align with the bolt and tightened just enough to hold the entire assembly in place. I've never encountered an "inverted" nut in my life, and at 64, I'm not a debutante. I was so used to just working with "regular" nuts that I didn't even try turning them "the wrong way". The same caution applies when removing the old plastic screw and its nut - do not turn the nut counter-clockwise, this is the direction you turn the "regular" nuts to loosen and remove. Instead, I tightened this damn nut and ended up having to split the bolt with a chisel to loosen this fancy bolt and nut.
