Review on Leisure Products LR425 Water Heater by Jacob Kuntz

Simply put, propane saves $

This is definitely recommended for any 6 gallon LP water heater, be it Suburban or Atwood. Reduce the number of LP refills from once a week to every 2 weeks. The kit includes all the necessary equipment and written instructions. Tools needed: Open-end wrench (or socket set or vise), Teflon tape, drill with 1/8-inch bit, and Phillips screwdriver. ON/PILOT again if you don't need an emergency shower as the electric heater takes much longer to heat up). Touch the valve and close it. Turn off the water pump. Use a socket wrench, wrench or vise to remove the drain plug (I do not recommend other tools as they can round off the hex edges) and drain the water heater completely. At this point, a water heater flushing tool can be used to flush out the interior of the scale buildup. It's also a good idea to screw a bottle of white vinegar onto the flush tool, place it in the water heater, and screw in the drain plug slightly to allow the vinegar to absorb any remaining calcium or scale, then flush again after about 10 minutes. Wrap the threads of the anode and the anode adapter with Teflon tape. Screw in the adapter (large for Suburban, small for Atwood) by hand, then lightly tighten with an open end wrench (do not over tighten as flushing the water heater every 6 months is a routine maintenance procedure). Screw the anode into the center of the adapter hand tight, then lightly tighten with an open-end wrench (be careful NOT to over-tighten as this could damage the anode). Run the supplied electrical cord through the vent of the water heater, leaving at least 30cm of cord inside the water heater. Drill a 1/8-inch hole in the water heater, preferably above the propane line that goes into the condo cabin. Place the included "loop" on the string about 3 inches from the end of the pen. Separate the 3 prongs of the cord and place the ring prong over the drilled hole. Pass the supplied screw through the "loop" and screw it into the drilled hole. Balance the included thermostat with the flattest side of the safety valve that provides access to the thermostat controls. The preset temperature is sufficient to start with and can be set to a higher temperature later (measure the temperature of the water leaving the tap with a thermometer and adjust the thermostat until the desired temperature is reached). Secure the thermostat with the cable ties provided. Now connect and connect all colored pins together. Then turn on the water pump again to refill the water heater with water. When the water pump stops working, temporarily open the relief valve to release air trapped in the water heater. If water is visibly dripping from the anode/adapter drain assembly at this point, tighten with an open end wrench if necessary. Finally, ONLY after the heater is filled, plug the electric cord into the outlet and allow the hot water to heat up (an anode that is not immersed in water can be damaged). There may be an extra outlet available on the back of the fridge but I prefer a large diameter extension which I connect to shore power to prevent the breaker from blowing and had the end of the cord tucked under the RV to avoid this keep out weather.
