We all know that plastic straws end up in the ocean and wreak havoc on our precious ecosystem, especially poor sea creatures who get stuck in them on or in their bodies. So I'm glad companies are making more of these reusable straws. I chose stainless steel straws with silicone tips because I bought them for my son and the students at the school I teach at. The softer tip makes it easier for those who cannot or are not used to having a metal tip in their mouth. If that doesn't bother you, you don't need a silicone tip. That said, if the silicone/rubber feels weird then it's probably better to use the straw as is. As for cleaning the straws and tip, I've put my straw in the dishwasher on a hot setting and it's washed up well so far. . No damage as I assume stainless steel is a very durable material. I hesitate to wash the lace in the dishwasher so I just hand wash it. But since I don't usually use a straw with a nozzle, the first wash was fine for me. But it also depends on what you drink. I suppose if you drink a clear liquid it will be fairly easy to clear. But when you're drinking something like a smoothie, or even chocolate milk, you need a deeper cleanse. Luckily, it comes with a small brush that can come in handy.
