After going gluten free and having to prepare most of the foods I took for granted at the grocery store from scratch, I had to expand my pantry to include all the specialties (code word for ridiculously expensive) Ingredients I always need to have on hand. i live in texas Whoever coined the phrase "more and more in Texas" must have in mind the three main factors that destroy a pantry: heat, humidity, and bugs. There are REALLY BIG FAULTS. I need different sized airtight containers to hold anything from a cup to ones that fit in a 5 lb sack of flour, light enough that I don't need a forklift to pull them out when full, and those stacked together to maximize my limited storage space. The Sistema bakery containers fit the bill and have exceeded my expectations for performance. I started with a set purchased in January 2014 and have since bought 3 more sets as well as about a dozen individual pieces of various sizes. After using them for 8 months I can say they are the best storage containers I have ever used. The lid seal is tight. Little tiny sugar ants came into the kitchen in the spring and none of the bins were damaged, although the ants reached the cupboards and bins before the exterminator showed up. They also did a great job of staying wet and wet, my white sugar stays up perfectly with no lumps and my brown sugar stays moist like new packaging. The raisins, nuts and other dried fruits also remained the same as they were in the containers. I've never had a case where a raisin didn't dry up, but now it does. All containers of different sizes can be stacked well to fit flexibly in the storage room. There is a rib on the lid and a ledge on the bottom to fit together and prevent shifting when stacked. The 3 largest sizes have one molded side and are slightly narrower than the other, creating a 'handle' that makes them less awkward to grip and carry than many large storage containers. The clips that hold the lids snap firmly in place, but are easy to open and close. I've never accidentally opened a latch. They also appear to be relatively durable. I dropped a large container of about 4 pounds of sugar when I was taking it out of the cupboard. He fell about a foot and a half and hit the counter with one of the rounded corners without damage. I thought it would at least crack, but it didn't. The only drawback I have noticed so far is the measuring cup. They have 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 cup markings on one side, but no 1 cup indicator. When I checked the measurement with one of my standard US measuring cups, the Sistema cup filled to the top held more than one cup. I mostly use them as measuring spoons anyway, but it would be nice if "cup" actually measured a cup. Before I had these containers, I threw away the ingredients every few weeks. In the time I've had them I've never had to change anything. Some specialty ingredients cost up to $5-8 per pound, so these containers won't take long to pay for themselves. I am very happy with them and would recommend them to anyone for storing dry ingredients.
