UPDATE***** After writing this review I took it upon myself to find out why these can openers don't work. After disassembly I found that all the gears are there. Then I manually shifted the gears and reassembled them. Since then I've used it about 10 times with no problems. I have no idea why they failed initially, but they work pretty well now. I wasn't expecting much when I bought them and they didn't even live up to my lowest expectations. I put in two new Duracell Coppertop batteries before attempting to open the first can. Although it fit snugly in the can, it clearly lacked the strength to go 1/2 inch of the can. Luckily he has a handwheel on the side, which opened the can after 5 minutes of digital athletics. On my second try, I removed these batteries to check their voltage and found that one was low and the other was 1.5V DC. I replaced the bad one with another new AA and got the same result. I would feel better if the manufacturer sold it as a manual can opener; I wouldn't feel cheated and they could save money by dropping the engine. Save your money, buy a P-51, which by the way led to me opening both of those cans.
