So here are the good things: - not that expensive - they go well together, they look solid, the light looks good BUT - there is no real sense in which they would be considered smart bulbs be able. With the iOS app you can choose a color (for all hexagons) or different dynamic effects. Some of the effects are frankly very attractive. Nice looking mood light with some flexibility and the possibility of dynamic colors that's not to complain about. There's also the usual supposed party mode where he's supposed to be doing *something* in response to the music. It was ugly as sin and I would never activate it again! The big problem is that there is NO way to program this thing with any external intelligences. You can't access it via HomeKit, via IFTTT, via HomeBridge, via a direct REST API, NOTHING. You can hope that it is compatible with Tuya, but it is not. The app lets you change the color or dynamic pattern manually, but there doesn't seem to be access to it via shortcuts or anything like that. You: The product appears to be SOLD by Yescom but MANUFACTURED by LifeSmart - this is NOT the same as Smart Life (a major Chinese Tuya compatible brand). The best you can do in terms of intelligence (and basically, connecting to Alexa doesn't do much more than that anyway) is plugging it into the smart jack. However, when it's enabled, it reverts to the default template (which is nice, thankfully) rather than what was previously set. And I don't expect the app to ever be updated beyond this basic functionality. So buy it as a nice decoration. But NOT as a programmable element. I'm hoping to use it as a status indicator, each hexagon is a different color depending on some logic I've programmed. But it's hopeless for that - if that's what you want, accept that you'll have to pay more and use Nanoleaf. Some other things to note: - The plates are small, each about the size of a fist, and they're quite thick. , again as thick as a fist. It's not a problem, just know you're getting this. Nanoleaf panels appear to be about twice as large in diameter, ie 4 times larger in area. Each hexagon does not have to be the same color. They actually display different colors on each panel - of course, you don't even have access to displaying an individual panel, let alone each individual subpanel LED. - READ the instructions on how to connect the pieces together. It seems so obvious that you're just sliding elements into each other, but in a really badly designed way, there are multiple ways to insert connector A into connector B, all of which look legal, but only one of them works. - These instructions are (of course!) written in tiny font. - The iOS app is certainly not the best, but I haven't seen anything to justify the insane paranoia some have around the application. + It asks for your location, but only because that permission is required to scan for Wi-Fi networks - you can give it permission once to set it up, and then never again. to another network (all my IoT stuff is on the 2.4GHz network) and does the right thing by scanning each network and choosing the one you want to use. + It asks for Bluetooth permissions so the phone can tell the light which Wi-Fi network to use. Nothing nefarious or remarkable. So I don't expect the app to reveal anything particularly secret about China. (Although who knows? There's a mic in the lights, so I'm assuming you either tape it up or have your secret meetings about planning to throw a party in another room.) The more realistic problem is that I expect this from the app to stop working in a future iOS update and LifeSmart would not be interested in fixing it. At this point, you should REALLY like the default template because that's all you'll ever see. The connection failed the first time and I had to try again; This seems to go without saying for cheap IoT stuff. Yes, it's stupid and sucks, but that's what you get at every level until you pay the prices of Hue and Eve. For the extra cost of these brands, you really do get something in the form of better radio firmware, significantly higher quality apps, and infinitely superior programmability.
