Review on 📻 MLA-30 Loop Antenna: Rainproof Active Receiving Antenna for Short Wave Radio 100kHz - 30MHz by Daniel Jenkins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well for the price

This is a "cheap Chinese" magnetic loop antenna, but that doesn't mean you should automatically proceed to the next step, in which case you will probably spend a few hundred dollars more. The main advantages of a magnetic loop are that it can pick up weaker signals with less noise than a random wire, and you can cancel out noise sources (like your local AM station). Money. That's decent for shortwave listening, but seems to work worse the higher you crank the frequency. I was very lucky with this antenna for evening and night listening at 25m and below. I've had no luck with long waves but I've never been where I am. I upgraded this loop to replace the standard element with 10 foot 3/8 inch copper tubing which has greatly improved reception and noise rejection on the HF and lower ham radio bands. I've kept the standard RG174 coax, but I may upgrade that as well at some point. They should just put a plug on the preamp box so people can use a different type of coax cable if they want. No complaints about the offset tee that comes with this antenna. One thing to know if you are planning to buy this antenna will require some form of assembly as the item is a flexible wire which will do the trick when not attached to something...PVC is probably the strongest, but you can just screw it on (or tie it). Preamp to a piece of wood by placing the tip of the loop about 25 inches above it.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Reliability
