At first, as everyone said, it smelled, but not like urine. as a very strong dye. They were well packaged, all tied together and easily detached. but I didn't want to take them apart until I washed them. I placed them in a bucket and filled them with warm water until well covered, then added 2-3 tablespoons of my favorite non-harsh laundry soap (Ms. Meyers). I rinsed the water and made sure the leaves were saturated and below the waterline. Then I let them soak for about an hour. I checked them after about half an hour, rinsed them again and added another tablespoon of detergent. an hour later I took them out and carefully poured out the green water. I hung the sheets outside to dry and left them with strings to keep them from getting tangled. I smelled them while they were still wet and smelled nothing but the faint scent of my laundry soap. When they were completely dry, they didn't stink, they smelled good. They also felt like all the extra paint had washed off (they were slightly tacky or soiled with paint). They were shiny and beautiful! As other reviewers have said, they are very subtle and realistic. I like the way they look and would buy them again.
