Sounds stupid, but it WORKS!

This is a great solution to get another smart key. (NOTE: This only works if you programmed an original "master" key (we keep one in the safe), it worked on my 2005 Highlander. I have not tried another spare key). My solution was to buy a plain door key, open the plastic cover and take out the metal key, do the same for this key, it locks. Be careful not to lose the gray chips, they might fall out. Use the drill to clean the hole where the key is attached and remove it. Cut or grind the cut key to fit in the same space (this is a straight shank). I used some super glue and then snapped the key case in, making sure the gray chip was inside. After that I checked if the key works. in the door and the ignition is running. He has to crank the engine. I then used this procedure to program the key: YES, it sounds silly, BUT IT WORKS! 1. Open driver's door, all other doors are closed but unlocked. 2. Without turning it, insert/remove the master key in the ignition switch 5 times, leaving the key inserted on the 5th. 3. Now close/open the driver's door 6 times and leave the door open on the 6th time. 4. Remove the master key, the safety light (to the left of the steering wheel on the control panel) stays on (program mode). Immediately insert an unprogrammed key. DO NOT ROTATE. 5. Leave the key in the lock for 60-80 seconds, the security lights will flash when they stop flashing. Remove spare key. 6. Immediately insert the master key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position without starting the car, then turn it off and remove it. Did! Now try a new key, the car should start. I had to do this a few times but it worked and now I have a spare for my daughter's car.
