We had to try 3 locations for the main unit as our home is a long ranch with a basement and the yard is down on one side and uphill in the back. So there was a place where there was a narrow path out of an area with no signal, or whatever you want to describe it, but then there was a shock, and it was a long way to a safe path. We tried a few more places to place the device and found a good spot where the borders made a nice wide circle around the house. Because the house is long, the area is smaller at the ends and larger at the front and back. The Miniature Schnauzer took time to train and won't get very far for a while, but now he has his limits and we can just kick him out to mind his own business. If we want to go for a long walk, he knows when he is wearing a collar or not and likes to walk on a leash every now and then. We would buy this again but recommend following the instructions and learning curve and expect it to last a couple of weeks at least. Exercise due care when placing the flags and check the signal to understand correctly. We put a collar on the stick so we can keep it at dog level and look at the red light all the time without bending down. So we could mark the borders correctly.
