Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great all in one espresso maker

My wife and I have been looking for an espresso maker for several months. Most machines in the lower end ($200 and under) offer very few features. Usually you need to buy a coffee grinder and a frother. Cars in the higher range ($500+) may hit or miss the review. So I stumbled across this machine, and while it looks like a fairly new offering, I was impressed by the reviews (well, not a few: see note at the bottom of the review). This machine is all in one. Burr mill with a suitably large funnel. Espresso nozzle with filter for one and two cups. Built-in foam nozzle. It's also rated at 20 bar, which is 5 bar more than the 15 bar that most experts consider the minimum pressure for espresso preparation. It has all the bells and whistles. Here is my opinion after a week of use: Pros: - Nice machine. Stainless steel with reinforced details. The espresso stick itself looks exceptionally "muscular". The backlighting of buttons and dials is very pleasant. The tray has a float that lets you know when it needs to be emptied. It seems that the manufacturer wanted to simplify the process as much as possible. It has a commercial look but is still stylish enough to fit in most kitchens without sticking out like a sore thumb. The water tank is huge. Based on espresso alone, it will probably take you 2 weeks to empty it. - Ready for immediate use. The controls are intuitive and most people will have their espresso ready within minutes of unpacking it. - Functionality is exceptional. The burr grinder grinds the beans and produces an even degree of grinding. The steam nozzle immediately froths the milk and the hot water function delivers a steady stream of hot water. The pressure behind the espresso machine is strong and I still love the crema that forms on the espresso when preparing a shot / Cons: - The steam nozzle is noisy when first started. I'm starting to think it has a lot to do with the vessel (small stainless steel foam pitcher) and also what you are foaming. I've whipped up milk, cream, and even Irish cream (for those wonderfully happy chinos, as I call them. LOL). In any case, it starts out loud but usually levels off about 30 seconds after the foam appears. - The instructions indicate the desired grind weight for single and double espresso shots. They're there, but the only thing I'm struggling with is the pounder. There is no practical way to find out how much pressure you are applying. While I'm becoming more consistent, there are times when he doesn't pack enough and doesn't hit the blue. The meter has an area that shows gray markers, a blue bar, and then another gray bar. In blue you are in the "Espresso" area. Other times I over press it and it goes out of the blue area. I've only noticed one problem where it goes well past the blue part of the sensor and the water doesn't go through the grinder and filter. I truly believe that making espresso is going to be a trial and error process, but as a beginner it's hard to see how far I've come. I bought Lavazza beans, used for espresso in Italy. No problem. I've always been in the espresso range on the meter when using this brand. The type of coffee I bought was a medium roast espresso (blue bag). I highly recommend that you purchase a case when purchasing this espresso maker. *** As for the cons, I feel like it's more down to me and my methods and will become second nature over time. I would highly recommend this machine to espresso fans and newcomers to the wonderful world of espresso making. Note: Shame on those who write one star reviews. Revain's mistake that it's not Breville has nothing to do with the manufacturer of that car. And since the machine doesn't reach 194 degrees (only 150), there's no way to check if you're telling the truth or not. Anyway, you know that none of these things deserve a one-star rating, and I think Revain should check the reviews more consistently. If you abuse the rating system, you will no longer be able to write reviews. Were it not for those two ridiculous reviews this machine would have gotten over 4.5 stars which based on positive reviews should be spot on. Now I step off the soap dish.
