$40 Pyle PDUSBPP10 with $1,000 Shure Microphone

I need a new mic pre to record my podcast directly to my MacBook Pro. When my Digidesign Mbox2 stopped working due to a lack of firmware updates for my Mac, I was looking for a good phantom powered mic preamp for my Shure KSM-44 microphone to record podcasts on my MacBook Pro. I was expecting to shell out another $150-$250 for an Mbox2-like device, but was happy to find the Pyle PDUSBPP10 as a $40 Revain replacement. I was skeptical but ordered it anyway as it was such a great price and seemed perfect for my podcasting needs with a microphone. I'm happy to report that it works well! A $40 mic preamp for my pro microphone right on my Mac that exceeded my expectations. The noise floor isn't as low as better preamps, but for the low gain threshold I use for podcasting, it works pretty well. (or not)* 48V phantom power for my professional microphone (Shure KSM-44)* price! Unbeatable value for money. Cons: * This isn't a top-notch preamp, so it's a bit noisy when the gain is used to increase the input volume. But it's $40, so you get what you pay for, and it sounds WAY better than $40!* A green/blue LED indicator lets you know when you're using the mute button on the device. It would be better if it was green/red to represent on and mute states so it would be more intuitive.

Pros
  • What's Included: Microphone Adapter USB Cable
Cons
  • So far so good
