$40 Pyle PDUSBPP10 with $1,000 Shure Microphone

I need a new mic pre to record my podcast directly to my MacBook Pro. When my Digidesign Mbox2 stopped working due to a lack of firmware updates for my Mac, I was looking for a good phantom powered mic preamp for my Shure KSM-44 microphone to record podcasts on my MacBook Pro. I was expecting to shell out another $150-$250 for an Mbox2-like device, but was happy to find the Pyle PDUSBPP10 as a $40 Revain replacement. I was skeptical but ordered it anyway as it was such a great price and seemed…

Works great as XLR USB, may require USB 2.0 connection

Works as intended. I had to connect an XLR mic that requires phantom power to my PC and that helped. The sound is clear and low-noise. Mute works well, with no audible clicks, and the glowing ring on the adapter lets you know when it's muted. Contrary to intuition, however, it glows green when the audio is muted instead of red, and glows blue when you're "live". Not a big deal, but red, yellow, or orange would be your best bets with the sound off. Conveniently, it's bi-directional, so you can…

Worst warranty support

I liked this product at first. Worked about six weeks. Then the gain control just stopped working. For this device, this is the drive between the microphone and the computer and should be around 50%. One day he just pretended to be on max boost. I called back but no change. Essentially, this control stopped working and unfortunately left the gain at "max" which we all know is useless (noise, clipping, etc.). Of course I can reduce the system input, but that doesn't help when the microphone gain

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • I have no negative feelings about it, everything is fine

Easy to use, easy to set up and portable

I was looking for a microphone interface that I could take anywhere. I usually record audio with my Focusrite interface, but it's square, requires a separate power supply, and most of the time I prefer to just leave it on my desk. So I bought this adapter so I can record with my microphone on the go and capture song ideas in my hotel room. Overall, I'm very happy with how well this thing works, but there are a few caveats. For reference, I'm using this on a newer MacBook Pro. Pros: - Easy…

Works great with Shure SH20 with Dynamite preamp

Due to the occasional hiss I prefer to use a pair of IEMs (earphones) and a WH20 to prevent noise from reaching my ears or being carried over to meetings. With the right ear tips, a pair of headphones can passively isolate background noise by 22 dB or more. The Shure WH20 Directional Dynamic Microphone needs to be about 0.5 inches from my month to pick up my voice. This distance to the signal versus the distance to the background noise helps reduce background noise reaching my…
