As with the electric fence, smart dogs seem to understand the collar. I've tried the recommended method, but as soon as I remove the collar, it barks at deer, cyclists, other dogs, etc. (it doesn't bark at a dog park or in a car). After a few weeks of training I leave the collar on all night with an automatic spray. So I can sleep from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and not disturb the neighbors; and once he barks, that's all; he is silent for the rest of the night. I don't want to wear it on my collar during the day; I have to choose my battles. He's guarding my house or trying to communicate with other dogs, and barking is a natural canine behavior. For me it's just a deterrent so I can sleep soundly. Luckily I have neighbors with dogs who understand me.
