ATTENTION FOR LINUX USERS!

ATTENTION FOR LINUX USERS! I bought it to use with the Kali virtual machine for penetration testing. I wanted dual band and monitor mode in a tiny USB dongle so I could keep it plugged into my laptop. Unfortunately, the one I received on May 2nd, 2019 is *NOT* the RTL8811AU chipset, but the RTL8811CU. All current versions will probably now ship with this updated chipset. You can check your chipset by running "lsusb" in a Linux terminal and looking for one of the following: 0bda:a811 = RTL8811AU0bda:c811 = RTL8811CU Unfortunately, the c811/CU version currently lacks mainstream Linux support. The supplied CD and even the latest drivers from their website do not support the c811/CU version. However, you can compile your own drivers for Linux. Locate "RTL8821CU Driver". There are GitHub versions of whitebatman2, suance, and axiomware. Whitebatman2 disabled monitor mode in the makefile while the other two enabled it [CONFIG_WIFI_MONITOR=y]. Axiomware also includes parallel mode and the latest driver with grid support. Unfortunately, Axiomware drivers on newer Linux kernels (like Kali Linux 2019) have some build errors. I was able to fix the bugs and send the fixes to Axiomware (see the Issues tab on GitHub) so they might update their files. Until then, it's best to use the suance drivers. I recommend installing via DKMS (stands up to kernel updates) and detailed Axiomware installation instructions will also help you download and compile other versions from GitHub. Work. Wireless gets blocked when I try to use it in monitor mode, Kali gets blocked on reboot and I have to do a hard reset. This adapter is therefore completely useless for my purpose. TL; DR: Although they met my needs for dual band in a tiny USB adapter, they changed chipsets and broke their own Linux drivers. Monitor mode does not work. However, it works on Windows 10 without additional drivers, which is why I give it two stars for that.

Pros
  • SoftAP mode to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for mobile devices with only a wired internet connection
Cons
  • Something is wrong
