You lost the Moen clip!
Yes, if you dropped your original Moen faucet clamp and there's no way you can find it again, this is the same clamp that secures it and also the one you so hopelessly lost. Oretti is sure this is the only retainer configuration but if you have a photo of the retainer to verify I would go to him. I was able to make a temporary fixer out of Paperclio and it worked. I just didn't want to risk it forever. Not sure, but the paperclip might have been a permanent fix.
