I had a case where three hard drive bays were directly on top of each other. When I tried using one SATA cable for all three drives, I heard a loud popping noise. I thought it was a SATA cable webbing because they are pretty tight. It turned out that the SATA power connector was indeed defective. Did I have to use the same cable for all three hard drives? Probably no. I just didn't want to connect more cables than necessary. which I thought was the purpose of the modular power supply. The good news is that the power supply comes with extra cables and I can easily replace the broken one.
