For years, the Sony Alpha range has been revolutionizing the camera industry. Unprecedented advances in camera technology have put the brand at the forefront of innovation and sales, but most lens versions have been designed to fill the standard lens range expected of a major camera brand. While lenses like the 16-35mm GM and 24-70mm GM are impressive, they're really just an iteration of a classic Sony lens, and many of us have been looking forward to Sony bringing their revolutionary engineers to the world of lens design . . .Enter: New 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens. First 12-24mm f/2 full-frame lens, 8 not only outperforms the competition in terms of focal length and aperture, but is also significantly lighter than any equivalent lens on the market. This lens is a true marvel of optical engineering and I hope this is an indication that future lens versions will continue down this path. My first thought when I heard 12mm at f/2.8 was "terrible vignette?" and I am very happy to report that this is not the case. Of course there is some vignette, almost universal for lenses of this focal length, but it's manageable and acceptable, and also quickly disappears as you stop down. The lens is fantastically sharp, even wide open. Extreme aspherical elements produce beautiful rectilinear image projections with almost no distortion, and the stretching of pixels in the corners (inevitable with straight lenses) strikes me as an artistic advantage, not a disadvantage. The Sony Nano AR cover once again proved to be an incredible performer and you can see in my 6th photo above that there is almost no flare or ghosting even when shooting directly into the sun.
