I have previously purchased two other types of kung fu shoes from two other sellers. One had a cotton sole. The house was very quiet, but the cotton sole was like a sponge so I couldn't even go out on the porch to get my mail on a rainy day. It was also very narrow, with an uncomfortable heel tilt. The second pair had a red-brown plastic sole. Better, but the plastic was very hard and slippery on tile/vinyl floors. When I turned a corner too quickly and lost my balance, I dropped the pair. This was my third attempt to find the traditional Chinese slippers I wore in college decades ago. Third time - nice! This model has a black rubber synthetic sole. The material and pattern offers better traction than the russet sole, but still not as much grip as I would like. I can step onto a wet porch and my shoes won't soak up the water. The width is comfortable (I usually wear wide shoes) and the heel is not as narrow as some other models. I usually wear size 8 men's shoes but based on reviews from other buyers I took the size and bought it. Size 42 which is a size 9 men's shoe. I'm glad I did as I used these 'shoes' as slippers and the larger size makes for very comfortable slippers. If you plan to wear them as shoes for more active walks or for intense training sessions, you should probably order your normal size so they fit snugly and stay in place.
