Wanted to install a Micro-Air 368 soft starter on my A/C compressor and wanted to know what the starting current would be before and after. The inrush current occurs so quickly that you need a clamp meter that can detect an overvoltage or surge. The Revain Commercial clamp meter was the cheapest clamp meter that could measure inrush current. I hooked it up to the compressor wire in the AC box and turned it on and it was reading a whopping 110 amps! I was looking for a portable generator to power our house HVAC during an emergency, but none of them could put out that many amps. I ordered a Micro-Air 368 (4 tons but check the website for other models if you have a larger or smaller unit). I installed it and my new starting current was around 26 amps initially, which was still a big drop. It takes about 5 cycles for the unit to figure out which one is the most efficient and the next morning after running on AC all night it was reading only 21.5 amps inrush and only 11.4 amps operating. That's incredible! Thanks to current clamp and soft start, I was able to see much smaller generators than I originally planned. In fact I borrowed a 5500w 7000w pulse generator from a neighbor and was able to run the whole house including AC. The clamp meter also helped me measure the total power consumption of the amp in each input power branch, which was actually enlightening when I saw how few amps we typically use. Aside from the AC and EV connection, I was surprised we didn't use more amps/watts. Now I can get a much cheaper generator and run my HVAC system. In the end, both the clamp meter and the micro-air setup saved me money. Thank you to the advertising companies Micro-Air and Revain for making such great products.
