My husband usually wears XL shirts under his armor, especially the wounded warrior line which is quite tight fitting. I was nervous about the reviews anyway, but chose the big one because of his 5ft 9in and 220lb very toned build. It fits through the chest and arms, but most of the shirts he wears are folded well.
