Review on Manfrotto 237HD Heavy Duty Super Clamp by Justin Garcia

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very strong/tough, much more than I expected!

The image on this item isn't quite right - I expected it to be a relatively compact, flexible arm (despite the 'Heavy Duty' label on it). I was very impressed when it arrived and was just as heavy, thick and chewy as it was. The arm itself is almost an inch thick, nearly 2 feet long, over a pound and a half, and very strong. hard to turn. It can definitely hold a flash - I think it can even hold a DSLR (but I'm not going to try!) - the thing is, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, the thing is REALLY stiff and a bit difficult to bend (needs strength - you need 2 hands to bend it). This is good (doesn't bend on its own!), but also bad if you need to make more than small bends or need to adjust the angle quickly. One end has a standard Superclamp bolt end (with a 3/8" threaded hole so you can attach it over the top of the stand). The other end has a 1/4" threaded tip (to attach something like a wireless flash trigger). The great thing about it is that while it's heavy, it offers a lot of flexibility (no pun intended). While you can always attach a strobe to a railing, you are somewhat limited in its angle/direction. This allows you to attach your strobe to a railing and position it exactly where you want it. at an angle, straight up, straight down, curved, etc. Sometimes the length is too long (at around 2 feet, sometimes you want it to be just a few inches). It's not the lightest thing to carry around (super clamp + mount = 2 lbs), but it's a lot nicer compared to a tripod and ball head. I mixed up with her a little bit. I like the extra flexibility it gives me, the light weight (compared to a tripod) and small size. but on the contrary, I would like it to be a little shorter and more flexible. It's one of those things you just can't win at, so I'm going to take it upon myself and recommend it. This is the best option I've found, it's sturdy/secure and gets the job done.

Pros
  • handy item
Cons
  • so far so good
