This laser level works great and has a nice compact design. The tool will self-level when the tool is within 4 degrees of level. If it's not within that tolerance, it will flash, indicating you need to make it smoother. This is great for setting up shelves where you want things to be oriented both horizontally and vertically. It does exactly what I need. This laser is very easy to use, but it took me a few minutes to figure it out before it worked. I'll tell you what I've learned so it works great for you too. When I first tried mine the readings were anything but normal and I wanted to write to Revain that I had a defective product. But then I decided to take the batteries out, put them back in, and I think most importantly, I flipped the switch from the center "off" position to the right "unlocked" position. When I did that, the laser blinked a little, moved and leveled! Then once it found a plane I flipped the switch to the left "locked" position and I had a perfectly good horizontal and vertical line. It only took me a minute to play around with it to figure out what I was missing. Once I figured that out, everything worked perfectly. The safety and maintenance booklet is located between the paper insert. You may have a product manual/instructions but I don't (despite the symbol on the back saying I must read it before using it). I was able to find them by going to the Craftsman website and looking in the parts and service section. You can enter your product number and download or email a PDF version of the manual. Batteries are included which is great as I didn't have to look in the battery compartment for 2 AA batteries. It comes with a magnetic L bracket that can also be hung on a nail/screw. The magnets seem strong enough. You can use the level with the included bracket or with a standard tripod - it has a 1/4"-20 threaded hole for attaching to a tripod or L-Bracket. You can also just set the spirit level on a reasonably flat surface like a table or counter.
