I immediately tested these detectors with a professional smoke detector tester spray and they both performed extremely well. Never rely on the test button to assume the detector is working! This only tests the alarm circuit, not the smoke detection ability. Buy a spray. Your life may depend on it! They are surprisingly compact - much smaller than the detectors of a few years ago. UPDATE: My wife seared tuna steak and used too much olive oil. Time. The result was quite a thick fume in and out of the kitchen, even with the extractor hood running over the hob! And, YES, the kitchen sensor worked as it should. I did as mentioned above and removed the alarm from the base until the smoke cleared and then put it back on.
