Good light, good range, good memory

I never thought I would ever buy a smart lightbulb, but I'm glad I bought this soft white LED lightbulb. I have a frequently used ceiling light and the wall switch that goes with it is in a terrible place. I was about to move the switch but it hurts a lot to cut the walls (the walls are 1930's "plaster on metal mesh" which makes any work on the walls painful and messy). So I decided to try this smart lightbulb to avoid rewiring. Setting it up with HomeKit was a breeze. I screwed the lightbulb back into place, opened the Home app, and controlled the lightbulb with my iPhone in less than a minute. Homekit has improved a lot and now I can't think of an easier way to do it. I experimented with dimming and increasing the brightness of the lamp and everything worked perfectly: good light and good dimming. No noise or flicker. I'm happy to report that the range and reliability of the Bluetooth connection is excellent. My Apple TV is literally on the other corner of my house - the lightbulb and Apple TV couldn't be further apart. Also, as I mentioned, I have metal bars with plaster in the walls - underneath all that plaster, each room is like a metal cage. And I live in a city with a ton of 2.4GHz radio interference (now I see 47 WIFI stations). So it looked like a real Bluetooth stress test and I was afraid it wouldn't work. But over the course of a few months it has proven to be 100% reliable everywhere I've tried it. I have come to the conclusion that the implementation of Bluetooth LE in this lamp is top notch. The power consumption is excellent. I measured the current draw of this bulb with my wattmeter. The lamp appears to draw half a watt when the light is off, rising to about 9 watts at full brightness. I usually keep this lamp at 70%. My Kill-o-Watt says it's 3.8 watts. Finally, I wanted to know what happens when someone presses a wall switch or after a power outage. Another piece of good news: the lamp remembers all its settings. If the lightbulb was at 44% brightness the last time I used it and then my wall switch is turned off, the lightbulb will go back to 44% brightness when the switch is turned on. Excellent! All in all it's a big win and now I can watch football or something without having to rewind cables. I will update this if anything changes. UPDATE: We've been using this bulb for over seven months now and it's working great. We use it more than 5 hours every day. Siri controlled this lightbulb with 100% success rate - it never let us down. I used the iPhone Home app to automate the lightbulb (turn it on 30% when it's evening and I'm not home, turn it on 70% when it's night and I'm home, turn off turn them off during the day or when I'm sleeping, etc.). Update: I'm happy to announce that iOS 12.1 also offers 100% reliable lamp control. iOS 12.0 seemed a bit problematic when controlling a lightbulb.

Pros
  • Energy saving lamps: Long-life 10 W LEDs (equivalent to 60 W incandescent lamp) in A19 standard shape.
Cons
  • boring packaging
