The belts were bought as replacements for the future. It's not uncommon for the belt to fail if the brush gets caught on the carpet or cord and you don't turn off the vacuum cleaner quickly enough; When you're cleaning the house, you definitely don't want to stop what you're doing so you can go to the store in hopes of buying a new belt to replace your broken one. I like to have a spare strap if I need it and hope I don't have to use it. This overcomes the frustration of not being able to find a replacement when you need one to finish vacuuming the house.
