That was a real disappointment considering LG's 6 year old IPS panel (27EA31). It's a good size for gaming, film, and graphics work, and color reproduction is good right out of the box, but the VA panel's character and questionable uniformity kill it for any art, video, or photo application. of this display, even in the center with a 50% gray full screen, it's like looking into a shadow well. Curiously reminiscent of Samsung AMOLED phone screens, true black pixels never shift or suffer from viewing angle issues as no light passes through them. So if you have a color or black and white image that is true black, that part will remain pitch black while the rest will shift and lighten as you move off center. It's a bit odd - and I suppose that's how they claim those amazing contrast numbers. They cheat tests. Colors are accurate as long as you stay absolutely still and at the optimal angle to the monitor, but if you tilt your head even slightly in any direction, the levels will shift. It's almost like a TN display or an old STN like old PDAs where the viewing angle was different from left eye to right eye. It's really that bad. HDR is cool and changes settings, most of which you can't tweak to your liking, so its practical use is limited. There's also no backlight uniformity. The gray image exhibited a "dirty screen" effect and showed darker streaks/lines running vertically. I'm not sure if it's related to the matte finish/texture or something else, but I've found other BenQ models suffer from this issue. If I ever just played games and watched movies, maybe that would be awesome. The display is bright enough, although that's a common gripe, and contrast is good as long as you don't tilt or move your head too much. But every time I load up Photoshop or any other image editor, color-bleaching viewing angles and uniformity issues are the deciding factors.
