Review on Cisco WAP581 Wireless AC Wave 2 Access Point, Dual Radio, 2.5GbE LAN, Lifetime Protection (WAP581-A-K9) by Jose Morrison

Normal range, there is interference

Normal access point, nothing special. The range is significantly less than a consumer wireless router with external antennas, there's no excuse for that. Well, some "network experts" say that "enterprise" APs actually need less range so they don't get in the way when deployed in a cluster, but then the same people claim that by switching to Ruckus, they've been able to install fewer APs with BeamFlex , because they have more range. Find out where the logic is. That's definitely enough to cover the house, but not too much outside on 5G. On 2.4G I get about 2/3 the range of consumer routers. However, there were a few issues early on with 5G that I think are worth mentioning. First, on the third day, it refused to accept any 5G connections - the network appeared, but none of my devices could connect. 2.4 worked fine. There was literally nothing in the logs so I restarted it and everything was back to normal. Then a few weeks later the connection dropped (on 5G again) but the device was able to reconnect after about 30 seconds. I've been messing around with the settings: disabled DFS and switched to 20/40MHz channel width instead of 80 and it seems to be working stably for a few weeks now. The spectrum analyzer also requires Flash. Yes, it's 2020 and they've created a web interface that depends on Flash. It's quite big and heavy. It also gets pretty hot when running and makes a high-pitched (albeit low) tone when heavily loaded on 5G, so install it where you won't hear it. You need to buy the PoE injector (30W) or the power adapter separately. I connected it to RV345P and it works great.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
