You can have solid colors. It can slowly rotate between colors - but only 2, red and something else. If you choose to spin between all colors it's too fast, think of a disco ball. I wanted to slowly switch between all the colors. Plus, it doesn't remember your settings, so every time you turn it off and on again you have to choose which mode you want by repeatedly pressing the button. I have other similar items that slowly change all colors and remember your settings. These lights are nice and bright but slightly brighter than other similar ones. Also, the lack of a power adapter to connect the USB cable was a bigger downside than I thought.
