Plastic coating cracks and peels

We bought two sets a few years ago, one for the house and one for the grandkids. The same thing happened to both of them. The plastic outer lids of almost all balls are cracked and peeled off, rendering them unusable as the inner ball breaks into two halves which then fall apart. We didn't use them much and only on grass. I'm now looking for another kit that doesn't have this problem!
