This device was easy to install and activate and did the job right away, if not quite as expected. See, since it's positioned as a converter and not an "upscaler" I assumed it was converting the video output as is. By this I mean that the device had to deliver 480i and 480p quality output at eye level with a 5-cable component connection, while keeping the aspect ratio and layout outside of the intended 4:3 scan. Rather, the image is scaled and warped to be widescreen, regardless of whether the Wii itself is set to widescreen or not. Therefore, when the Wii is set to the standard ratio, you get a stretched picture and no solution, TV or whatever, can fix it. This is not ideal and will cause problems with games or settings designed to work without widescreen. The second big problem is how it handles overscanning, or in this case I suspect "underscanning". As this is meant to be a digital output you would expect that when the Wii is set to 480p the picture would hit the logical edges of the pixels both at the top and bottom, but this device seems to compress the picture and add a layer of black bars around. display, which forces you to overscan on the TV, which in turn distorts the picture. Since overscanning doesn't seem to be an issue when connecting the Wii to a digital TV's composite RCA jack, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why they're causing the problem here specifically. My final issue is the intense heat the device generates. . In fact, it feels very hot! My first impression was the proximity to the vent on the back of the Wii, but after testing with the Wii still cool and the ventilation minimal, I still found the converter to get hotter than I give it credit for. It can be used to some extent, but I feel compelled to keep an eye on it in case of electrical damage or, at worst, a potential fire hazard. I usually start with a 5 star rating and downgrade or deviate from that as things develop. In each of these cases, I ran into a problem that I had to solve or experiment with until I got the claimed result. And even then, the resulting image doesn't quite match the setup of the Wii component. So every problem got a star.
