Straight to the point - the two screws (of four) on the underside of the bracket that attaches to the base must be removed with a Phillips screwdriver before articulating. There are four screws on one side and three screws on the other side. On the side with four open and counterclockwise counting from the top, remove screws 2 and 3. The lower arm will now be articulated. It is odd that these screws are present as the forearm is clearly intended to be articulated. The springs and hinges are fully functional and the base is heavy enough to stabilize the lamp in most positions. But nowhere in the accompanying instructions is this explained. These two screws are "set" screws and do not add to the structural integrity of the arm in any way. It is also interesting that not only two screws are missing from the provided photos of this lamp, but also the screw holes. Perhaps they were added as a safety precaution - extreme shoulder positioning as well as using an A19 bulb could result in the bulb falling and starting a fire? Possibly, but if you're like me and live recklessly and to the limit, remove the two screws to really make the lamp mounts work. Contrary to what is stated on the product page, there are a few more steps involved in assembling the lamp. But once the two screws are removed and the lamp is assembled it is very good value for money. Any A19 bulb will do, including LED. The lampshade also rotates so that the lamp can be oriented horizontally. The base is very heavy, allowing the lower arm to be fully vertical and the upper arm at a 45 degree angle without the risk of the lamp falling. If the lower arm is completely vertical and the upper arm is at a 90 degree angle, the lamp may fall forward, especially with a heavier bulb. So unscrew the two strange screws from the lower arm and enjoy this lamp.
