If the plastic drain plugs are too tight to remove by hand, you'll need a tool to remove them; However, this is not the right tool. Plastic is too brittle and will break on real sticky ones. I almost broke it twice, once on the slotted lid and once on the raised square ledge lid. Not a single cover was broken. It would be great if it was cast metal and I would probably buy 2 or 3 of these. But the plastic - they gave me back the money. Don't waste your time. They had a great idea, but they chose the wrong material.
