Works right out of the box. There was no need to sync them or anything like that. I put the batteries in, turned it on and the sound appeared. The sound is clear and loud. I have to keep an eye on the volume when kids are using it because there's no such thing as a "childlike" setting. So if I hear them while driving, the kids pull them forward and I turn them off. They are also quite durable. My 3 year old has a habit of running them through the van when I turn off a movie halfway through the same episode she has been watching on repeat for the past 2 months and they have not cracked or broken.
