I bought these wax crayons for encaustic. They were recommended by the teacher because they work so well on wax paintings to set highlights and fill in wax etched lines to fill scratches with color. The price was really good as it was higher in most online art stores I buy from. This may be because the company is changing the box that the crayons come in because a website advertised a new style of box. These wood coated crayons are called "3 in 1" because they are water soluble so they can be used for painting with wax based watercolors so they can be used like regular crayons (but they are quite expensive for this type of use) and it can be sharpened like a crayon and used like a pencil (again - a bit pricey for that). To use it as a watercolor pencil, you can either draw a line of wax inside the outline but close to the outside of the object you want to paint, then wet your brush and run over the wax to thin it out and draw the paint towards it paint the picture. . The color gets darker at the edge and lighter towards the middle, creating a very nice effect. You can also scribble some color on a piece of plastic, e.g. B. an old flat container lid, wet the brush and run it over the colored stain to make it runny, and then paint over it with paint like regular watercolor paint. You can also paint the surface of a rubber stamp by spraying it lightly with water, letting the water sit on the stamp for a few seconds to liquify the paint, and then rubbing the stamp onto the card stock for a brush effect. Stamps with large, flat surfaces work best for this, as small parts do not stamp well with this method. In my opinion, using these crayons in watercolors and rubber stamping is the best use for these crayons. Being new to encaustics I haven't tried them on wax yet but a video of them being used on wax showed them to look very easy.
