Great concept, some issues but good performance

I gave the BTA30 a negative review at first and gave it one star. return planned. Then I decided to try again. Turns out I was feeding it a faulty Toslink cable. I replaced the cable with a new one I had on hand and it started working very well. I use the BTA30 with a pair of Shure Aonic 50 headphones. Stocks can use a variety of codecs, including aptX and LDAC. BTA30 connects to LDAC and sounds great. It also allows me to create a second connection with my iPhone so I can make and receive calls while listening to music. With the longer range, I can move around my office without losing connection to the BTA30. Pairing is relatively easy. First I connect to the phone and then to the BTA30. In most cases this works fine. From time to time I have to press the "Pair" button on the FiiO and then it reconnects. I had trouble pairing with other headsets. Doesn't seem to remember them and if you change you may need to pair again. Not quite sure. Need to experiment more. I've also used a USB connection with computers that don't have optical outputs. This has a lower bandwidth but otherwise works well. Volume control does not work in USB mode. This is by design, not a defect. I've also used the BTA30 as a receiver to broadcast Bluetooth to my stereo. Works well. I can only use the AAC codec with my iPhone. Not optimal quality, but that's not FiiO's fault. A limitation. The mode switch on the device is difficult to set. There are three positions. Transmission is the middle. I had to set it up very carefully to hit the sweet spot. When I wanted to return the device, I looked for equivalent products and couldn't find anything else. All in all this is a very good product. Not perfect, but definitely useful and entertaining.
