My YouTube viewers often ask how they can use their camcorder as a webcam. Most camcorders do not support this feature through their USB connections, so an additional device is required. The Magewell XI100DUSB HDMI device seems like the best way to do this at the lowest cost. In fact, the device works so well that no drivers are needed on a Mac or PC - it just shows up in any app looking for a webcam. In this video I test it with Skype, Google Hangouts on Air and Quicktime Capture. Each of these applications recognized the Magewell device without any further configuration. It even deinterlaces the original video in hardware. Is it ideal? no For one, it's quite expensive - $300. Another problem, at least on a Mac, is that the audio sounds heavily compressed. Without drivers it is impossible to adjust the audio codec settings. But overall, it's a quick and easy way to connect your camcorder to your PC without any complicated setup or drivers.
