I'm a dentist and have been using Sonicare brushes since 1992. This is an older model (2nd generation) and more durable than later models. The handle is much thicker (and heavier) than the newer models, and the brush heads screw on (newer models just snap on). This can be a significant disadvantage for some users, but I haven't had any issues with it and it will last for many years. The only thing that can really kill him is an old battery. Mechanically there are no internal moving parts in this device (other than the on/off switch), the moving part is in the brush head itself and is therefore updated with every brush change. On newer models, the mechanical parts are internal and cannot be replaced. As a result, newer and more expensive models don't last as long. My relative only uses the newer ones as they are more maneuverable for her. They serve about 2 years.
