Like many others I had problems deciding between this and a small wooden ax from GB. As a DINK (hooray, no children = disposable income!), I decided in the decision-making process to simply take both. Here's my take: Both axes are great woodworking tools. The GB is definitely a higher quality and finish, although the Wetterlings are just as useful, serviceable, and finally made. The average user will never notice a fault with a Wetterling axe. It is slightly heavier than the GB and has a wider taper angle from blade to shank. This makes it an excellent splitting axe. The edge became razor sharp, actually too sharp, and curled up on the first few uses. After sharpening reached a stable angle after several delays, it did not need to be sharpened for more than a month. The grip of the Wetterlings is thicker and, as I said, a bit heavier overall. The GB has a thinner and lighter handle that balances the ax better with most of the weight on the head. This detail can only be recognized by an inexperienced lumberjack. For your average user, every request is phenomenal. I hope this helps you in your decision of what to buy.
